Specifying part of the floor against it lets one room serve a returning member, a deconditioned beginner and an athlete — which is a cheaper answer than three rooms and a better one than losing the first two. School and campus recreation
A campus weight room takes harder use than almost anything else we equip, and it takes it from people who are being coached to lift heavy. That makes both the structure and the surface safety items rather than budget items. IBC Table 1607.1 designs fitness areas for a 100 psf live load, which matters most when a strength room goes into an existing building. ASTM F2772 then covers the floor as measured properties — force reduction, vertical deformation, ball bounce and surface friction — which is what a platform area actually needs written into the specification.
